HORS LES MURS

AFRIQUES CAPITALES / GRANDE HALLE DE LA VILLETTE
29 MARCH - 21 MAY 2017

Exhibition held at the Grande Halle de La Villette - Based on a proposal by AFRICA APERTA / Dominique Fiat - Curated by Simon Njami.

THE 100% FESTIVAL

In 2016, La Villette inaugurated a new multi-disciplinary festival, both rich and surprising. Theater, dance, circus, music. 100% combines high standards with a wide range of tastes to create a major rendez-vous for creation and innovation.
Juggling all artistic languages, 100% offers a month of activities: shows, installations, concerts, workshops, itineraries and encounters. The festival is an invitation to discover the diversity of the artists supported throughout the year by our residencies, and to see the best of today's creation through some of the biggest names on the international scene.
international scene.
Because creativity never ceases to broaden its horizons, the second edition of the 100% festival presents the contemporary African scene in all its facets: dance, theater, music, fashion, design, exhibitions, culinary creations... for a month of high-flying exploration.

METROPOLIS/ AFRIQUES CAPITALES

How beautiful is a city at night

Curated by Simon Njami

The space of the Grande Halle de la Villette is divided into two parts: on one side, the Temple, represented by a white cube (the current portrait gallery), and on the other, a street.
The Galerie des portraits houses works to be hung on the walls: photographs, drawings and paintings. On the footbridge, seemingly observing what's going on below, a Don Quixote, superb and haughty.
The street: a long ribbon of asphalt bordered by houses, each with its own surprise. The diffuse sound of music from four jukeboxes (each containing a specific selection) accompanies this wandering. The doors of these shacks are closed. You have to get inside to find out what's going on. Videos, reproductions of bars, installations...
Unusual objects sometimes hang over our heads. An upside-down house, a paper labyrinth, neon lights.
We may be surprised by an unusual scene, performances or poetic declamations.
In the outside gallery, a souk, a kind of contemporary curiosity shop, oriental and sub-Saharan at the same time, a fiction, naturally.
The follies will be libraries, video spaces, improvised ecomuseum-style cabinets of curiosities.
In the gardens, on the lawns, labyrinths and sculpted forms and grass.
